Using a Limited Palettte

Rockport Seascape, 8"x8" watercolour on Arches Aquarelle paper
Paperwhite bulbs, 8"x8" watercolour on Arches Aquarelle paper

It is quite amazing to see the range of colours you can get when limiting your palette to three colours.  The way the colours mix when you work wet-in-wet is quite magical!

  1. Hi Janet, these are beautiful! They remind me of the watercolours of Charles Burchfield and of Marsden Hartley. Bold and almost abstract! I also enjoy working with a limited palette and letting the colours mix on the paper. The joy of watercolour! Which 3 are you using?

  2. Hi Kathleen! If I am not mistaken, the three colours were Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre. Amazing how many different colours you can get with just three! Great fun to explore this.
